Usa Captain Paul Azinger

USA Captain - Paul Azinger

Paul AzingerPaul Azinger, appointed this year as the United States Ryder Cup Captain, believes that the appointment is his greatest golfing honour to date, he says he is “awestruck” by it.

Azinger who is 46 years old, is a four time playing member of the United States Ryder Cup team and will be all out to 'stop the rot'. The Europeans have won the Cup on the last three occasions for the first time in Ryder Cup history.

He is a former major winner, having won the US PGA in 1993, remarkable as he was diagnosed with cancer shortly after. He has also won 14 worldwide Tournaments since turning professional in 1981. He very nearly won the British Open at Muirfield in 1987 too, He had led the final round until he started to falter on the back nine and a bogey at the last eventually cost him the Championship. He ended up runner - up to ...oh.... yes.... you guessed it.....Nick Faldo! They do battle again here as opposing Captains. “It will be a good rivalry,” Azinger has said, “but it's America vs. Europe—not Nick vs. Paul.” Try telling Nick Faldo that Paul!

Azinger however, put that behind him and has proven his courage many times since, he has fought back form a terrifying debilitating disease and now stands at the helm of the United States Ryder Cup Team, knowing that a great destiny awaits the winner

Unlike his counterpart in the European Team, Paul will have four 'wildcard' picks for the team. He will no doubt look to players who can compete both individually and as part of a team. The Ryder Cup Schedule demands this.

The first thing Paul will want to instil into his players will be to forget the results of the Ryder Cup's from 2002, 2004 and 2006. They are not good memories for the USA Team and he will be insisting that the 'rot stops here'
