Phil Mickelson - USA Ryder Cup Team
The left handed Phil Mickelson is a household name and the golfing world and one of the World’s great golfers. A winner of 7 Amateur titles, 34 PGA Titles, including 3 majors, plus 7 other worldwide events. He is second only to Tiger Woods in World golf today. Not too many realise that Phil Mickelson is actually right handed, but plays left handed.
One of his greatest achievements and certainly one that put him firmly on the golfing map, was his win in the Northern Telecom Open in 1991. He was 21 years old and still an amateur and was one of only 4 player ever to do this on the US PGA Tour.
His record im Major events is quite amazing, the only question mark being why he has not won more. He has won the US Masters twice, in 2004 and 2006, but has finished in the top ten on 9 additional occasions-tying third place in the four of them. He also won the US PGA Title in 2005 and came runner-up in this event in 2001. In all, Mickelson has had am incredible total of 26 top ten finishes in Major Tournaments. The only Major where his record is questionable is that of the British Open, where his best finish so far has been his third place in 2004.
Phil should have certainly won the US Open too in 2006. He had a one shot lead when playing the last, but managed to completely ruin his chances by playing the hole in totally the wrong way. He ended up double bogeying the hole and lost by one shot to Geoff Ogilvy. It would have been Phil’s third Major Title in a row, something achieved only be the Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods.
Another question mark over Phil Mickelson is his performances in the Ryder Cup. He has represented the USA on the last six occasions and has played in a total of 25 matches. However he has only been on the winning side in nine of these and has lost 12 times. In six singles matches he has won three and lost three.
He is currently ranked 2nd in the World.
