Martin-Kaymer - Ryder Cup Team Europe
After a stuttering start, German golfer, Martin Kaymer has made a big impact on the European Tour since joining it from the Challenge Tour in 2007. He actually missed the cut every time in his first five Tournaments, but finally broke his duck and qualified for the final two rounds at the Singapore Masters. He finished in a tie for 20th position. All these missed cuts came in Tournaments playerd outside of Europe, but as soon as Martin returned to more familiar territory, his Tournamenet success improved.
In his first Tournament after returning to Europe he tied for 15th in the Madeira Open, he then finished in a tie for 3rd place, the following week in the Portugese Open. Between March and June in fact Martin had five top 25 finishes in six Tournaments.
Later in 2007 he gained a 7th place finish in the French Open and then came 2nd in the Scandinavian Masters. He made a few headlines a few weeks later at the Portugese Masters, when he fired a round of 61, which tied the lowest round on the European Tour in 2007. He went on to finish in a tie for 7th place. He then followed that up with an excellent tie for 6th place in the Volvo Masters. Martin finished the season as the highest ranked ‘Rookie’, for which he was given the Henry Cotton Award. In all he achieved five top ten finishes in 2007 which placed him into the top 100 in the Workd rankings.
He got his first win in January of this year when he won the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, finishing ahead of the tied runners-up, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson. This win lifted him to 34th in the world. Two weeks later, Martin was in the limelight again when finishing runner-up to Tiger Woods in the Dubai Desert Classic. Martin earned his second win on home soil in Germany, when he won the PGA German Masters, after aplay-off with Anders Hansen. He is currently ranked 33rd in the world and he will be making his Ryder Cup debut.
