Hunter Mahan
Once again another surprising wildcard choice of Captain, Paul Azinger. Hunter is no doubt a gifted golfer, but his season has not been of the highest of standards, acheiving only three top ten finishes on the PGA tour and missing the cut in three out of the four Major golf tournaments. In fairness, he has finished in the top twenty in many other tournaments this year.
He also expressed, somewhat controversially and naively that he thought he thought the Ryder Cup was a form of slave labour, clearly meaning that he did not relish the prospect of playing for his country without being paid. This is something he has publicly apologised for, but as a consequence, he will no doubt be one of the players the media might negatively target. Hunter is currently ranked 37th in the world and has won just one PGA title since turning professional in 2003.
His top ten finishes in 2008 are
- Mercedes Benz - T5th
- Arnold Palmer Invitational - T 6th
- Travellers Championship - T 2nd
