Europe Captain Colin Montgomorie

European Captain - Colin Montgomerie

Colin Montgomerie emerged as a late candidate for the Ryder Cup captaincy in 2010 due to his relatively young age for a Captain but he has taken on the role with gusto and seems determined to wrestle the Ryder Cup back from the grasps of the USA. Monty has taken part in an excellent eight Ryder Cups as a player and is labelled as one of the greatest players ever never to win a major tournament.

His appointment was based on the fact that because he still plays on the European Tour he will be closer to the players which should help him Captain the team at Celtic Manor, this was one of the major criticisms levelled at Nick Faldo who was suggested to be out of touch with the younger players in 2008.

In a slight revamp for the team selection Colin Montgomerie will have three wild card picks along with the nine automatic qualifiers for his European Ryder Cup Team rather than the two that have been used recently. This was a reaction to the Europeans loss in Valhalla in 2008 but still falls behind the USA team who have four wild card selections and eight qualifiers through the ranking system.

Montgomerie has scored a brilliant 23.5 points in the Ryder Cup to leave him second on the all time list behind Nick Faldo but he will be aiming to do something Faldo was unable to do, and that is to win the Cup as a Captain.
