Daniel Chopra - Ryder Cup Team Europe

Daniel ChopraDaniel Chopra was born in Sweden, to a Swedish Mother and Indian Father. Daniel moved to India at the age of seven where he was raised by his grandparents. He took up golf very early in life and won the All-India Junior Golf Championship at age 14.

He turned professional in 1992 but only found limited success. From 1996 to 2002 he played intermittently on the European Tour but often failed to hold on to his card. However his form changed and he managed to secure a place on the US PGA Tour in 2004. He did very well in the US Open that year finishing in a tie for 24th place.

In 2007 he won his first Tour event, the Gin sur Mer Classic and has since followed that up with a win in the opening event this year, the Mercedes Benz Championship. The Mercedes was a terrifuc win earned after a play off with top ten ranked Steve Stricker. It is a Championship won by many of the world’s top golfer’s, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh. Prior to the win Daniel was still a relatively unknown golfer, but this win rocketed him up the World Rankings – he is currently ranked at 69.

He has a very aggressive style of play and many think his game is ideally suited to the Ryder Cup matchplay format, particularly in the foursomes and fourballs.

At dinner after the Mercedes Benz Championship, Chopra sent over two bottles of wine to Nick Faldo, the European Ryder Cup Captain, who accepted them graciously. It served as a good reminder to the European Captain that Daniel Chopra was a real candidate for the Team.
